So, you’re ready to try your first Reformer Pilates class—exciting! Whether you’re looking to build strength, improve flexibility, or simply try something new, Pilates is an incredible way to challenge your body while focusing on mindful movement.

At Revity Pilates, we know that stepping into a new workout can feel a little intimidating. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help you feel prepared and confident before your first class.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Unlike traditional mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates uses a specialized machine called a Reformer to add resistance and support to your movements. The sliding carriage, springs, and straps create a low-impact, full-body workout that builds core strength, tones muscles, and improves flexibility.

Reformer Pilates is perfect for all fitness levels—from complete beginners to experienced athletes—because the machine allows for modifications and progressions tailored to your body’s needs.

What to Expect in Your First Class

1. A Warm Welcome & Orientation

At Revity Pilates, we keep our class sizes small to provide personalized attention. When you arrive, your instructor will introduce themselves, explain the basics of the Reformer, and help you get set up for class.

2. A Focus on Alignment & Control

Pilates isn’t about rushing through movements—it’s about control, precision, and engaging the right muscles. Expect to focus on core activation, spinal alignment, and proper breathing techniques to help you get the most out of each exercise.

3. A Full-Body Workout

You’ll work your core, arms, legs, and glutes using a mix of slow, controlled movements and resistance-based exercises. The class will progress at a steady pace, ensuring that you feel challenged but never overwhelmed.

4. Gentle Stretching & Recovery

Pilates is just as much about mobility and flexibility as it is about strength. You’ll end your session with stretching and breathwork to leave you feeling refreshed, balanced, and energized.

What to Wear & Bring

  • Wear comfortable, fitted workout clothes that allow for movement (leggings and a fitted top work best). Avoid anything too loose, as instructors need to see your alignment.

  • Grip socks are required for safety and hygiene—these provide traction and prevent slipping on the Reformer. (Good news: We sell stylish, natural-fabric grip socks at Revity Pilates!)

  • Bring water to stay hydrated—Pilates might be low-impact, but you’ll still work up a sweat!

  • No need to bring a mat—the Reformer provides the support you need.

Tips for Your First Class

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early so you can get familiar with the studio and meet your instructor.

  • Listen to your body—Pilates is about controlled, mindful movement, so don’t force anything that doesn’t feel right.

  • Engage your core! Even if an exercise seems focused on your legs or arms, core activation is key to Pilates.

  • Have fun! Pilates is a journey, and your first class is just the beginning of a stronger, more balanced you.
